🗓️ General Guidelines for Nail Trimming

  • Average: Most dogs need their nails trimmed once a month (every 3 to 4 weeks).

  • Active/City Dogs: Dogs that walk frequently on hard, abrasive surfaces like concrete or pavement tend to naturally wear down their nails, so they might only need a trim every 4 to 6 weeks.

  • Inactive Dogs: Dogs that spend most of their time indoors, on carpet, or on soft surfaces like grass/dirt need more frequent trims, often every 2 to 4 weeks, as their nails don't wear down naturally.

  • Puppies & Seniors: Puppies often need more frequent trims (sometimes every 1-2 weeks) because their nails grow fast. Senior dogs are often less active and also need more frequent, consistent attention (every 2-4 weeks).

👂 The Best Way to Tell If It's Time

The simplest rule of thumb is to listen for the "click-click-click" sound:

  • If you can hear your dog's nails clicking on hard floors (like wood or tile) when they walk, it's definitely time for a trim.

  • When your dog is standing still, their nails should not touch the floor. They should be short enough so that only the paw pads make contact with the ground.
